GROSSO GUAIO DI KANEBO: RITIRO DAL MERCATO DEI COSMETICI CON RHODODENOL
Da noi non se ne parla, ma KANEBO il prestigioso marchio giapponese, è in grossi guai.
Infatti è in corso il ritiro dal mercato di tutti i suoi cosmetici che contengono RHODODENOL, una molecola proprietaria , con forte effetto schiarente depigmentante.
Migliaia di consumatori-consumatrici hanno lamentato la comparsa di antiestetiche macchie bianche, vitiligine.
In molti casi le macchie sono associate a vere e proprie infiammazioni locali.
Il ritiro dal mercato Giapponese di tutti i cosmetici con questo ingrediente si stima possa superare i 4.000.000 di pezzi per un valore stimato oltre i 60.000.000 di US$.
E ancora non si è cominciato a parlare dei danni che i consumatori o le consumatrici possono richiedere….

si tratta di 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanol, un attivo con effetto depigmentate congenere ( della famiglia ) degli schiarenti fenolici.
Dalla presentazione al IFSCC (International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists) , oltre 15 anni fa , del 4-n-butyl resorcinol ( RUCINOL) molti altri attivi simili sono stati sviluppati ed utilizzati nei cosmetici depigmentanti.
Oltre ad avere una discreta o buona capacità di inibire e/o degradare la tirosinasi, questi attivi hanno in genere sul melanocita un effetto analogo a quello dell’idrochinone. Quindi anche a piccole dosi possono produrre uno schiarimento effettivo ( contrariamente alle decine di inibitori della tirosinasi che sulla pelle, in vivo, non sbiancano quasi nulla).
Il RHODODENOL non è inserito nell’inventario europeo degli ingredienti cosmetici.
Viste le molte marche/sottomarche e le attività globalizzate del gruppo l’area interessata dal ritiro include : Taiwan, Hoing Kong, S.Korea, Thailandia, Malesia, Indonesia, Filippine, Myanmar e Vietnam .
Al momento non pare che i mercati europei siano interessati, anche se con i marchi SUQQU e RMK pare che alcuni prodotti siano stati commercializzati anche in UK.
Da quanto mi risulta, il RHODODENOL non è presente nei prodotti KANEBO SENSAI , commercializzati in Italia.
Secondo KANEBO ed i medici che hanno preso in cura i casi con reazioni avverse pare che l’inestetismo sia “reversibile” . Questo significa che lentamente la pelle ritornerebbe alla sua colorazione, anche se , sospettando meccanismi d’azione analoghi a quelli della vitiligine indotta da idrochinone , non sarei molto ottimista sulla faccenda.
L’immagine affianco di un viso con evidenti segni di vitiligine è solo a titolo di esempio, non rappresenta un caso di quanto pare sia stato prodotto dal RHODODENOL.

Al solito la comunicazione molto semplificata ed a volte pseudoscientifica con cui vengono promossi gli attivi cosmetici lascerebbe spazio a molte puntualizzazioni o critiche.
La più immediate:
1- la molecola utilizzata da Kanebo è di sintesi, i riferimenti alla corteccia di betulla bianca sono un espediente che fa riferimento al “natural occurring” di questo tipo di molecole. In sostanza questa molecola e molecole congeneri possono trovarsi in vari frutti o piante. E’ una abile finezza del marketing aver scelto come provenienza di un attivo sbiancante la “candida corteccia della betulla” anziche lo scurissimo succo di more o di altri frutti di rovo che ne contengono probabilmente di più.
2- La commercializzazione di questi cosmetici si è focalizzata su paesi asiatici con il claim “whitening” quando l’attivo non pare agisca inibendo la Pheomelanina.
3-Tra i 5 o 6 meccanismi d’azione conosciuti per regolare la pigmentazione della pelle viene citato quello della riduzione della tirosinasi ( anti-tirosinasi ) , che il più delle volte si è rivelato sostanzialmente inefficace.

Research on melanin control II: Development of Rhododenol
The next active ingredient (quasi-drug) we developed after Magnolignan was Rhododenol. Rhododenol is derived from a substance we found in abundance in a search for natural chemical compounds in the bark of the white birch tree. Kanebo Cosmetics discovered that one of these compounds confers strong brightening effects by suppressing the production of melanin in several stages.
The three mechanisms of the Rhododenol effect
- Inhibiting tyrosinase activity: The enzyme tyrosinase is a key factor in melanin synthesis. When activated, it binds with the amino acid tyrosine and gradually changes it to melanin. Rhododenol inhibits the activation of melanin production by binding with tyrosinase before the tyrosinase has the chance to bind with tyrosine. This action is called “competitive inhibition.”
- Accelerating tyrosinase degradation: Rhododenol reduces the amount of tyrosinase by accelerating its degradation.
- Inhibiting eumelanin synthesis: Melanin comes in two types, eumelanin, a brown-to-black type, and pheomelanin, a yellow-to-reddish-brown type. Eumelanin is thought to be the main cause of dark spots, dullness, and other types of pigmentation. Rhododenol inhibits eumelanin synthesis by preferentially lowering the amount and activity of enzymes involved in eumelanin synthesis.
